1.Definition of a Cell A cell is the fundamental structural and functional unit of life. All living organisms, from the simplest bacteria to complex multicellular organisms like humans, are composed of cells. The cell carries out all life processes, including metabolism, growth, and reproduction. 2.Cell Theory Proposed by Matthias Schleiden and Theodor Schwann (1838–1839) and later expanded by Rudolf Virchow, cell theory includes three main points: 1.All living organisms are made up of one or more cells. 2.The cell is the basic unit of structure and function in living organisms. 3.All cells arise from pre-existing cells (Virchow, 1855).
